Aga Khan Academy Maputo Students Celebrate 'Book Lovers Week'
The week started in Homerooms on Monday morning, with the “Drop Everything and Read” activity. In the Early Years Centre, teachers read to the students or students shared their favourite stories with their classmates. In the Junior School and Senior School, students and teachers read a book of their choice.
Events continued every lunchtime in the library with book related activities. Students were able to listen to the audiobook version of J.K. Rowlings first Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal". Pupils also had the option of participating in one of three different book-related competitions: drawing their favorite book character, designing or drawing a bookmark, or creating a folded bookmark. The Grade 4 and 5 students particularly enjoyed making folded bookmarks for themselves, friends and family.
Assembly on Friday morning was the highlight of the week! Each Homeroom had been challenged to dress one member of the class as their favorite book character. The book character was then introduced to the assembly by a classmate, who explained who the character was and why they had been chosen. Every Homeroom created fabulous characters and it was wonderful to see how supportive and creative all our students were - particularly for the younger students who were faced with the largest audience they have seen! Secret judges decided who the best characters were and the winning Homerooms will receive cupcakes soon!
Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to celebrating Book Lover's Week next year!
