Human Rights lawyer João Nhampossa visits Diploma Programme 1 students
On 25 February 2022, global politics students in the Diploma Programme 1 received a special visit from guest speaker João Nhampossa, a Mozambican human rights lawyer and social activist.
João Nhampossa has extensive experience in litigation and has done significant work in assisting local Mozambican communities in accessing their rights, especially those impacted by business in Mozambique. He holds a master's degree in human rights from the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Law.
João spoke with the students and shared with them the highlights of his journey as both a lawyer and a social activist in Mozambique. “Together, we all reflected on the current status of human rights in the country, the challenges and the successes,” said Senior School humanities teacher Bernardo Arsenio.
“This visit by Mr Nhampossa was part of the students’ second unit on 'human rights', and Mr Nhampossa has challenged our students to ‘open their human rights eyes’ and become social activists and agents for positive social change, identify issues in our local and school community that need to be addressed,” Bernardo continued. “Mr Nhampossa has also opened channels for future interactions with our students and we hope to build stronger connections between experts like him and our school community.”
