Junior School celebrates International Mother Language Day
On Friday, 26 February, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo's Junior School commemorated International Mother Language Day with a special virtual assembly.
International Mother Language Day promotes awareness of the various languages and cultures around the world. At AKA Maputo, students come from varying backgrounds, cultures and speak different languages and this was recognised and appreciated during the virtual assembly. Students were asked to share greetings in the language(s) they speak, which ranged from French, English, Hindi, Portuguese and more. Afterward, a few games were played with the students in which they learned simple greetings in different languages with each other and were given words in different languages and had to pick the correct English words that correspond with it."Here at the Academy, we believe that pluralism is one of our greatest strengths, and we know that language is an important aspect of culture," said Primary Years Programme Coordinator Emma Wheatley. "This makes learning about our own languages and those of the people around us a great way to learn about our cultures, our stories and to understand one another. It was a great experience for me as I was also able to learn greetings in languages that were new to me!"
As always, the JS assembly ended with a story reading, with this week's story being a multi-lingual one.
