Marrabenta Day 2022

12 February 2022

On 11 February 2022, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo's Junior School students wore their beautiful Capulana outfits (traditional Mozambican attire) to honour the wonderful Mozambican dance tradition of Marrabenta!

Marrabenta is a well-known style of Mozambican dance music that combines traditional Mozambican rhythms with Portuguese folk music. Still seen today, this style of music was developed in Mozambique's capital city of Maputo during the 1930s and the 1940s while the country was still under Portuguese colonial rule.

Throughout the day, the students engaged in various fun and exciting activities. These included showing their best Marrabenta moves in front of live music played by their teachers, exploring local games, parading around the school to the beat of a drum and a Kahoot quiz to test their collaborative knowledge in house teams.

"This year's Marrabenta celebration was, once again, a colorful event as many of our students came to school in their lovely Capulana outfits," said Junior School Principal Maike Silver. "A very big thank you to all our teachers for making this an eventful day for our students!"
