Mbeu Associacao de Cultura Arte e Teatro Arte
The Portuguese-speaking drama group Mbeu Associacao de Cultura Arte e Teatro Arte came to the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo for our Children’s Day celebrations. They performed a traditional Bantu play about a rabbit who is both naughty and good.
In the play, the rabbit tricks the farmer pig and his friend the hyena. If this character sounds familiar – a bit like Br’er Rabbit or Bugs Bunny – that’s because these stories of a clever rabbit who outwits his rivals originated from the Bantu-speaking people in Africa. The stories were taken to America and the Caribbean by slaves who retold them there.
Shanty Malik Ali, Grade 3, said: “It was so funny and interesting. The actors were really good!”
After the play, the characters came to the classrooms to answer students’ questions about the play.
