Meet Pete Makey
With over 30 years of experience, Pete Makey is the new Head of English Language and Literature at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo. He is also responsible for the students’ leadership curriculum, training new teachers and the development of the subject.
Pete is from the United Kingdom and has spent his time living and working in Spain, Switzerland, China and Japan. Due to Pete’s excellent and innovative work that stems from his great passion, experience, commitment and enthusiasm for teaching and leadership, Pete was invited to meet the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in recognition of his achievement. He has also been highly praised for his leadership and management as headteacher by the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, or Ofsted, which inspects educational institutions in the UK.
Through his position, Pete aims to establish programmes at the Academy to help create future leaders who will make a positive difference for the people in their communities. He also added that he intends to “support new teachers and subject leads to confidently fulfill their roles.”
Pete said his favourite part of the Academy is the sense of a combined vision to work towards creating a fairer, more tolerant and more peaceful world. “I am excited to work in a school that is aligned with my own principles and values,” Pete said. “In my daily work, I am committed to working collaboratively with my colleagues to ensure students become effective, ethical leaders.”
