Message from the Head of Academy
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It has been an unusual and disturbing time of late with a great deal of uncertainty and anxiety caused by the COVID-19 virus and its impact. The Academy has tried to proactively anticipate recent events and whilst the campus is closed, the Academy is definitely open!
The introduction of our online learning programmes has enabled students and teachers to continue to interact and provide some meaningful learning opportunities. It would not have been possible to have established these programmes and activities without your full support and help. On behalf of the Academy, therefore, I would sincerely like to thank the whole community of parents, students and staff who have pulled together to ensure the successful implementation and introduction of the distance learning programmes.
As learners ourselves, however, it is important that we continue to improve, refine and reflect upon the quality of what we are doing, but also, to acknowledge the tremendous efforts that have got us to this point. From an Academy perspective, I am thrilled to see how our teaching teams are working together to support students and each other. I am also grateful for the positivity of parents and students. The feedback received has been helpful and formative and will, I am sure, help us to make sure that the work being set is manageable, enjoyable and relevant to the needs and interests of each student. I know that our teaching staff is in close and regular contact with the students, and with you as parents when needed. Let us continue to keep these close lines of communication open.
As you will be aware, the Mozambican government is faced with the difficult task of ensuring the well-being of us all. Following President Nyusi’s announcement of the State of Emergency yesterday, it is important for us to consider the implications and wait for further details of measures that will be taken to keep us safe. In addition to the support and advice being offered to us by the Ministry for Education and Human Development (MINEDH), we are in regular contact with the Academies Unit, the Aga Khan Development Network and other colleagues from Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad. Our aim is to learn from each other, keep abreast of developments and take decisions that keep everybody safe. We also want to ensure that student learning continues.
As part of an integrated network of Academies and also part of the AKDN, we have benefited from the guidance of the AKDN Steering Committee and Task Force on COVID-19. Indeed, His Highness has assembled a series of National Task Forces, including , of course, for Mozambique. The work of this group, on which I serve and which met on Friday 27th March, will contribute to the AKDN Steering Committee and Task Force. Information from the group will be going, ultimately, to His Highness. The purpose is to have a clear and detailed understanding of the circumstances in each location, provide a conduit for sharing and to focus us on the financial implications for our projects. How we best look after the safety and wellbeing of the Academy community is our prime concern.
As we continue to face the current circumstances, I would urge us all to be vigilant in maintaining the hygiene and social distancing guidance that has been issued by the World Health Organisation. It is clear from everything that we read that the virus does not travel by itself, it is we who mobilise it. It follows therefore, that each of us has the power to stop the spread of this dangerous virus and to protect the most vulnerable from its effects.
At the present time, we assume the closure of the campus until at least April 30th, in line with yesterday’s government announcement. We will be communicating further as details of measures arise.
In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole community for the outstanding way in which it has responded to these difficult and challenging circumstances. We are, as they say in South Africa, ‘Stronger Together’. Let us continue to help, support and care for one another during these unprecedented times.

Os últimos dias, têm sido um período incomum e preocupante, com incerteza e ansiedade causadas pelo vírus COVID-19 e seu impacto. A Academia procurou antecipar proativamente os eventos recentes e, enquanto o campus está fechado, a Academia está definitivamente aberta!
A introdução dos nossos programas de ensino on-line permitiu que os alunos e os professores continuassem a interagir e a fornecer algumas oportunidades significativas de aprendizagem. Não seria possível estabelecer estes programas e actividades sem o total apoio e ajuda dos pais. Portanto, em nome da Academia, gostaria de agradecer a toda a comunidade de pais, alunos e funcionários que se uniram para garantir que a implementação e a introdução bem-sucedida dos programas de ensino à distância.
Como aprendizes, porém, é importante que continuemos a melhorar, refinar e refletir sobre a qualidade do que temos vindo a fazer, mas também reconhecer os tremendos esforços que nos levaram a chegar a esse ponto. Do ponto de vista da Academia, fico emocionado ao ver como as nossas equipas de ensino estão a trabalhar juntas para apoiar os alunos e uns aos outros. Também estou grato pela positividade dos pais e alunos. O feedback recebido foi útil e formativo e, com certeza, vai ajudar-nos a garantir que o trabalho que está a ser definido seja administrável, agradável e relevante para as necessidades e interesses de cada aluno. Sei que a nossa equipa de professores está em contacto próximo e regular com os alunos e com os pais, quando necessário. Vamos continuar a manter abertas estas linhas de comunicação.
Como devem saber, o governo moçambicano está a enfrentar a difícil tarefa de garantir o bem-estar de todos nós. Após o anúncio do Presidente Nyusi do estado de emergência ontem, é importante considerarmos as implicações e aguardar mais detalhes das medidas que serão tomadas para manter-nos seguros. Além do apoio e aconselhamento que o Ministério da Educação e Desenvolvimento Humano (MINEDH) nos oferece, estamos em contato regular com a Unidade de Academias, a Rede para Desenvolvimento da Aga Khan e outros colegas das Academias de Mombaça e Hiderabad. O nosso objetivo é aprendermos juntos, acompanhar os desenvolvimentos e tomar decisões que mantêm todos seguros. Também queremos garantir que a aprendizagem dos alunos continue.
Como parte de uma rede integrada de Academias e também da AKDN, nos beneficiamos da orientação do Comitê direcional e do Grupo de Trabalho do AKDN no COVID-19. De fato, a Sua Alteza reuniu uma série de Grupos de Trabalho Nacionais, incluindo, é claro, para Moçambique. O trabalho deste grupo, no qual sirvo e que se reuniu na sexta-feira, 27 de março, contribuirá para o Comitê direcional e o Grupo de Trabalho da AKDN. As informações vindas do grupo irão, em última análise, à Sua Alteza. O objectivo é ter um entendimento claro e detalhado das circunstâncias em cada local, fornecer um canal para partilhar e concentrar-nos nas implicações financeiras para os nossos projetos. A melhor maneira de cuidar da segurança e do bem-estar da comunidade da Academia é nossa principal preocupação.
À medida em que continuamos a enfrentar as circunstâncias actuais, apelo a todos a mantermos vigilantes às orientações de higiene e de distanciamento social emitidas pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Está claro em tudo que lemos que o vírus não viaja por si só, somos nós quem o mobiliza. Conclui-se, portanto, que cada um de nós tem o poder de impedir a propagação deste vírus perigoso e proteger os mais vulneráveis dos seus efeitos.
Atualmente, assumimos o encerramento do campus até pelo menos o dia 30 de abril, de acordo com o anúncio do governo ontem. Iremos comunicar à medida que surgirem mais detalhes.
Enquanto isso, gostaria de aproveitar esta oportunidade para agradecer a toda a comunidade pela excelente forma com que respondeu a essas circunstâncias difíceis e desafiadoras. Nós somos, como dizem na África do Sul, 'Stronger Together' (Fortes Juntos). Vamos continuar a ajudar, apoiar e cuidar um do outro durante este tempo atípico.
