Message from the Head of Academy
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been another long and productive month of online learning. We are so impressed with the students and we know that your support for their learning has been central to their success, so thank you all!
As we will all have heard, the Government announced yesterday that the State of Emergency has been extended until June 28th . This means that the campus will not re-open before the end of the term on June 19th. We will, therefore be continuing with our online learning programme until then. Our teachers will prepare written school reports which will be ready for sending to you by then.
There are some very important events at the Academy which are coming up next week. As you know, the Academies have adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum framework to underpin our academic programmes. We have been authorised to run the Primary Years Programme (PYP) already, and we are now at a very important stage for the validation of our Middle Years Programme (MYP). This is an essential step in becoming an IB World School. Next week, therefore, on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd June, we will be hosting two highly experienced evaluators to verify that the Academy reaches the standards of excellence required by the IB to run the full programme.
This verification visit will be a ‘virtual’ one and will involve Rebecca Nichols, our MYP Coordinator and all of our MYP faculty, along with myself and members of the Academy Team based in Paris and London. Most importantly, however, it will involve our students and members of the parent community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our stakeholders for their positive support and investment in this vital process, because it is a very demanding process at the best of times. To undertake this during CoVID 19 and a State of Emergency is unprecedented, and once again demonstrates what an extraordinary community we belong to. My sincere thanks to Rebecca for leading us through this complex and detailed process and to all members of the MYP team who will each have an important role to play in the successful validation of the Academy Middle Years Programme.
Please note, that as a result of this important event, our schedules will be affected on Monday and Tuesday. Rebecca will not be available in her usual role as she will be coordinating the many meetings that are necessary. All MYP staff will be involved in a meeting early on Monday morning which means that online lessons and learning will not start until 0845hrs on June 1st. Also, please note that MYP staff will be required to attend meetings across the two days of the ‘visit’, and therefore the students will at times need to self-manage themselves on one or two occasions. I know that Rebecca and the team have posted further details on ManageBac, and have discussed these with the students this morning.
There have been some extraordinary events happening across the Academy. The Africa Day celebrations across all classes were enjoyed by faculty and students alike, and the PYP students engaged in an online PYP Exhibition. This was a vital piece of work for the Grade 5 students who would normally have presented to a live audience. We look forward to giving them the opportunity to present to us on their return to school so that we can witness face to face some of the excellent skills that were demonstrated.
We look forward to providing opportunities for PYP parents and students to take part in Zoom conferences so that they can meet their child’s teachers to hear about their progress both before and after the closure of the campus. We look forward to hearing from you and learning more about the support we can offer for your child’s learning.
We know that we continue to face uncertain and challenging times. Please know that the Academy is here to support you in whichever way it can. We will continue to keep you updated on our plans, and in particular, how we might continue to support students and keep them connected over the long holiday period.
In the meantime, take care and please stay safe. Please know that the Academy is working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the return of the students. We have missed and are missing them terribly!

Foi outro mês longo e produtivo de ensino on-line. Estamos muito impressionados com os alunos e sabemos que o seu apoio foi fundamental para o sucesso alcançado por eles, portanto, o nosso obrigado a todos!
Como deverão já saber, o governo anunciou ontem que o estado de emergência foi prorrogado até ao dia 28 de junho. Isso significa que o campus não será reaberto antes do final do período, a 19 de junho. Portanto, continuaremos com o nosso programa de ensino on-line até lá. Os nossos professores prepararam relatórios escolares que estarão prontos para serem enviados até ao final do período.
Na próxima semana vão acontecer alguns eventos muito importantes na Academia. Como sabem, as Academias adotaram a estrutura curricular do Bacharelado Internacional (IB) para sustentar os programas académicos. Já fomos autorizados para o Primary Years Programme (PYP) e agora estamos num estágio muito importante para a validação do nosso Middle Years Programme (MYP). Este é um passo essencial para nos tornarmos numa Escola Mundial IB. Portanto, na segunda-feira dia 1 e na terça-feira, dia 2 de junho, receberemos dois avaliadores altamente experientes para verificar se a Academia atinge os padrões de excelência exigidos pelo IB para executar o programa completo.
Esta visita de verificação será "virtual" e envolverá a Rebecca Nichols, a nossa Coordenadora do MYP e todo o corpo docente do MYP, além de mim e de membros da Equipa da Academia sediados em Paris e em Londres. No entanto, o mais importante é que envolverá os nossos alunos e membros da comunidade de pais. Gostaria de aproveitar esta oportunidade para agradecer a cada um dos nossos stakeholders pelo apoio positivo e investimento neste processo vital, porque é um processo muito exigente, na melhor das hipóteses. Realizar isso durante o CoVID 19 e num estado de emergência não tem precedentes e demonstra mais uma vez a comunidade extraordinária a que pertencemos. Os meus sinceros agradecimentos à Rebecca por nos guiar neste processo complexo e detalhado e a todos os membros da equipa do MYP, que cada um terá um papel importante a desempenhar na validação bem-sucedida do Middle Years Programme da Academia.
Tenha em atenção que, em resultado deste importante evento, os nossos horários serão afetados na segunda e na terça-feira. A Rebecca não estará disponível na sua função normal, pois irá coordenar as várias reuniões necessárias. Toda a equipa do MYP participará duma reunião na manhã de segunda-feira, o que significa que as on-line não começarão antes das 8h45 do dia 1 de junho. Além disso, é necessário que a equipa do MYP participe em reuniões nos dois dias da 'visita' e, portanto, os alunos às vezes precisarão de se autogerir numa ou outra ocasião. Sei que a Rebecca e a equipa publicaram mais detalhes no ManageBac e já foi discutido com os alunos esta manhã.
Houve alguns eventos extraordinários acontecendo em toda a Academia. As celebrações do Dia de África em todas as classes foram apreciadas por professores e alunos, e os alunos do PYP participaram numa Exposição on-line do PYP. Este foi um trabalho vital para os alunos da 5ª classe que normalmente se apresentariam ao vivo a uma plateia. Esperamos ansiosamente dar-lhes essa oportunidade no regresso à escola, para que possamos testemunhar, ao vivo, algumas das excelentes habilidades que foram demonstradas.
Esperamos que os pais e os alunos da PYP participarem nas conferências em Zoom, para que possam reunir com os professores e ouvir sobre o progresso académico, antes e depois do encerramento do campus. Esperamos ouvi-los e aprender mais sobre o apoio que podemos oferecer para o ensino dos vossos filhos.
Sabemos que continuamos a enfrentar tempos incertos e desafiadores. Saiba que a Academia está aqui para ajudá-lo naquilo que for possível. Continuaremos a mantê-lo atualizado sobre os nossos planos e, em particular, como podemos continuar a apoiar os alunos e mantê-los conectados durante o longo período de férias.
Enquanto isso, mantenha-se são e fique em segurança. Por favor, saibam que a Academia está a trabalhar arduamente nos bastidores preparando-se para o regresso dos alunos. Continuamos a sentir muito a falta deles!
