MYP coffee session with parents
On 30 September, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo hosted its first morning coffee session with Senior School parents of Grade 6, 7 and 8 students. This session focused on “Explaining criterion-based assessment in the Middle Years Programme” and was conducted by Dean of Studies and interim Senior School Principal Alejandro Zepeda.
“We chose this topic because it is probably one of the most stressful topics for students and parents,” Alejandro said. “Understanding how assessment at the AKA Maputo works allows us to lower this stress and collaborate more efficiently towards the results we wish to obtain.”
The main goal of the coffee session was to help the parents understand how students are assessed at the AKA Maputo and how such assessments differ from the educational systems and curricula that most parents went through as students. The session also aimed to clarify how the AKA Maputo ensures that the students’ academic results are assessed across all subjects with an international standard.
Alejandro said he greatly enjoyed how the parents were engaged in the session, and how they were clearly informed of what happens at the Academy through conversations with their children. “I think this open communication is key, as it allows feedback to flow back to us and we can gauge how our students are feeling about school and what we can do to keep improving,” Alejandro said.
After the session, parents were also given a brief school tour to explore the new spaces and facilities at the Academy.
