PYP coffee session with parents
From 16-17 September, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo hosted its first coffee session with Primary Years Programme (PYP) parents for the new academic year. This workshop was split into two groups, with the first session hosted for Grade 1 to Grade 3 parents, and the second session hosted for Grade 4 and Grade 5 parents.
The workshop focused on the PYP mathematics programme “Math — No Problem” and was conducted by PYP Coordinator Emma Wheatley and Junior School Principal Maike Silver. The session aimed to equip parents with the insights they need when assisting children with their mathematics homework.
“Together, we explored the approach to learning and understanding mathematics, some of the strategies used in the classroom and the values at the core of the programme,” Emma said. “We then spent some time solving a few maths problems our students are working on and discussing what approach they may take to solving them. This helps us to understand how to support our children, what questions we can ask them and ways to encourage their growing love of maths!”
Maike said the way in which mathematics is taught in primary school has drastically changed since parents of PYP students went to school. “One of the biggest realisations for parents was that students are asked for more than one way to solve a problem. This engages students’ thinking, builds their confidence and allows them choices and different angles to approach mathematics.”
After the session, parents were also given a brief school tour to explore the new spaces and facilities at the Academy.
