Shaping peace together
On 21 September 2020, the Academy community came together to celebrate International Day of Peace with a virtual assembly. They shared their favourite quotes on peace, practiced guided meditation and participated in an origami session led by a student.
International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Each year, the Academy celebrates this day with an assembly and various activities that address the importance of maintaining peace around the world.
In keeping with the UN’s theme of Shaping Peace Together, we had a student Enzo Ferrão (Grade 10) who shared the art of origami and led a session for everyone in attendance. Each student created an origami peace dove which is the symbol of peace and innocence in many cultures.
Students also joined in sharing various quotes on peace from world leaders and young activists. Students and faculty joined in for a special reading of Pakistani education advocate, Malala Yousafzai’s book Malala’s Magic Pencil. This reading showed students the worldview that allowed her to hold on to hope and to make her voice heard even in the most difficult of times.
During the session, students and teachers took out a moment for meditation that was facilitated by teacher, Edna Margarido. At the end of an engaging and interactive sessions that raised discussions on the importance of internal peace and as well as peace around the world, students were encouraged to have an off-screen day and join their families in exercises and discussions centred around the theme of the day.
