Scholarship Programme
The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is launching a unique scholarship programme to attract Kenya’s brightest young minds to join the Academy.
Six merit-based scholarships of up to 50% off fees for outstanding students who can demonstrate superior academic ability. This includes:
- B average for international curricula
- B+ for KCSE students
- 390+ for KCPE
Applicants must have also excelled outside of the classroom in one or more of the following areas:
- Leadership in the service of others
- Innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math
- Environmental Responsibility
- Performing Arts
- Team Sports
Scholarships will be awarded to students from a diversity of socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, linguistic and other backgrounds across Kenya. Based on demonstrated merit and financial need, scholarship awards may cover up to 50% of school fees, including residential fees. View the fee schedule here.
Scholarships are open to new students applying for admission in August 2022. The deadline for application is 1st July 2022.
The process:
Students should make an application through the normal admissions process (an application fee is payable) and indicate their interest in applying for the Aga Khan Academy Scholarship Programme.
*AKASP is open to new students only; those already enrolled at the Academy are not eligible.
- Fill in the below form.
- An initial assessment to determine suitability for the scholarship programme will take place.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a personal interview with the Dean of Admissions. This interview will assess the ability of the student to contribute significantly to the Academy outside of the classroom.
- Final selection includes an interview with the Head of Academy and the Dean of Admissions.
*The decision of the Academy in awarding these scholarships will be final.
Eligibility:
- To apply, students must be residents in Kenya.
- The scholarships are open to students who are able to demonstrate exceptional academic ability and the potential to benefit from a unique educational programme based on the International Baccalaureate and the Aga Khan Strands.
- Scholarships are needs-based and will take into account aspects of the financial position of the family at the time of interviews.
- Scholarship awards may not cover all costs, and some scholarships will require the candidate and their family to contribute part of the cost.

Lilian Odera (Class of 2015): Passionate about change in the community
Lilian Odera, a bona fide leader and advocate of change, is a 2015 alumna of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. Born in Kenya and raised in both Kenya and Germany, she speaks English, Swahili and German. Owing to this culturally diverse background, Lilian's parents were prompted to send her to AKA Mombasa, a pluralistic community she could thrive in.
The Academy nurtures future leaders through its unique curriculum and this provided the perfect environment for Lilian to hone her leadership skills. In addition to being an active sportswoman, Lilian served as a House Captain and member of the Student Representative Council. While in her last year of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, she was awarded the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow (ILOT) award to study at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The award recognises students with superior academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement in community service.
“I would say my experience at the Academy was like a springboard into my future,” Lilian says of her time at the school. “I had amazing mentors and none of what I achieved would have been possible without their support.”
While at UBC, Lilian continued to pursue opportunities in line with her passion to effect change in the community. She has participated in several community-based projects including organising the first Afrocentrism Conference, which celebrated the identities of people with African descent. The successful event, which pulled in over 500 attendees and raised CAD $60,000, had acclaimed Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong’o as the keynote speaker. As part of her work as founder and event coordinator for a project that actively involved working with the community around her, she was awarded the prestigious Nestor Korchinsky Student Leadership Award in January 2020. In addition, she also recently marched with the Black Lives Matter movement in Vancouver, Canada. Lilian also won a $5,000 scholarship in 2019 and got into cooperative placement. In a nutshell, her experience at UBC was quite transformative, as she says, “I’m leaving UBC a different woman than I came.”
Although she has graduated with a Bachelor of Media Studies, Lilian is now looking to venture into education. While it is not a career path she imagined, her passion for directly working with people to creatively find solutions to issues is part of the reason she wants to get into education.
“I’ve witnessed how one event, how one change in policy can have a direct impact on how students adapt to new places, develop new relationships and understand themselves and the world around them,” says Lilian. “Although I’ve previously been shy about considering myself a leader, I've come to own that title in part because I've seen the level of trust and confidence people have put in me to execute a project. Being a leader comes with a lot of responsibility and I've never particularly been shy of putting in the work - just witnessing people's reactions, their joy, relief and celebration, is such an amazing reward in itself.”
If there's one lesson from the Academy she has continued to carry with her, it's the importance of being part of a community and working with the community. This has become apparent in all the community-based initiatives she has undertaken ever since leaving the institution.
"As I've grown, I've realised that my continuous involvement with community organisations here in Vancouver is in part influenced by that," Lilian states. "It is through community work that I learn more about myself and the world around me."
So what advice does she have for the young leaders at AKA Mombasa? “It's very easy to be narrowly focused on just grades. Yes, they are important, but life is not measured purely in letter grades. I recommend students seek out adventures and experiences to supplement what they learn in the classroom - whether it's travelling, volunteering at a charity, starting or joining a club. It's important to become holistic and wholesome, to be rich in experience and knowledge.”

What is the Fellows Programme at the Aga Khan Academies?
Academy Fellows have the opportunity to work with gifted and talented students from diverse ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. Each Academy Fellow will live on campus and serve the student residential programme as a Dorm Parent promoting community life.
Academy Fellows have a demanding and important role in our community and may be responsible for any of the following, depending on the Fellow’s interests and experiences and the Academy’s needs:
- Key role as a Dorm Parent in the residential programme, which includes weekday duties and weekend duties.
- Assistance in a specific curricular area under the mentorship of an experienced master teacher.
- Tutoring individual students or study groups.
- Involvement in the administrative work of departments such as Admissions, Communications or University Counselling.
- Coaching sports and athletic teams, providing music lessons, SAT prep, artistic pursuits.
An integral part of the residential programme at the Academy, the Fellows participate actively in and chaperone off campus field trips, engage in the enrichment programmes (sports, arts, ...) and are closely involved in the student leadership development programme, including activities such as Model MUN, TedX etc.
These opportunities are offered at all our Academy campuses: Mombasa, Kenya, Hyderabad, India and Maputo, Mozambique - Future Academies are planned across Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East.,In which parts of the world can I hope to serve as a Fellow?
Fellows can indicate a preference when applying.
Is this a permanent role or can I come just for a few months or a year?
These will be two-year appointments, overlapping so as to assure continuity. Some Academies will consider one year appointments but prefer a longer commitment.
What are we looking for in our Fellows?
- Genuine interest and commitment to the mission of the Aga Khan Academies and to the development of young people.
- A record of excellent academic achievement at a highly respected college or university.
- A record of significant involvement in residential life, student leadership programming, music, athletic and/or community service during college or university.
The Fellow's programme also provides onsite mentoring and coaching by experienced faculty and staff and an opportunity to experience life in a lively and dynamic school environment.
Some Fellows may come from the AK Academies’ alumni body and others may decide to pursue a career in teaching or education in general.

The Times of India: Aga Khan Academy gets going in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: The Aga Khan Academy, a state of the art international school belonging to the Aga Khan network of institutions was formally inaugurated in presence of spiritual leader Aga Khan in an elaborate ceremony on the academy premises in Shamshabad on Friday.
Faculty Development
Promoting excellence in teaching, both on campus and more broadly, is a fundamental goal of the Aga Khan Academies.
The effort to establish a Professional Development Centre (PDC) at each Academy is one of the outstanding features of the network. The PDC aims to strengthen the profession of teaching in the region by providing substantial professional learning opportunities and modelling highly effective educational practice.
Developing strength in teaching
The Academies aim to identify and develop teachers of the highest quality who are committed to both the all-round development of young people and to their own professional excellence. The Academy PDCs support excellence by striving to model best practices in teaching and learning within all of its classes and by providing high quality development opportunities for all Academy teachers.
Faculty members are also enriched by opportunities to work collaboratively with more experienced colleagues from around the globe and to teach abroad within the Aga Khan Academies network.
Investing in teachers
In addition to a broad programme of professional development for faculty and staff, the Academy PDCs offer substantial programmes under their Professional Learning for Educators Series (PLES) for teachers in local government, independent and not-for profit schools.
The PLES programmes are specifically designed by the Aga Khan Academies to respond to the needs of teachers, as identified through extensive market research and dialogue with government officials and education departments.
The series includes programmes for teachers in various subject areas as well as specialised programmes focussing on the skills and capabilities required for effective teaching.
Each programme builds professional competence by focussing equally on enhancing teachers’ subject knowledge and on how best to teach that subject. Each provides participants with a balance of intensive facilitated learning activities followed by an extended period of assisted application and observation within the context of their own classrooms.

Exame Moçambique: Aga Khan Academy starts in August
Exame Moçambique reviews the plans for the opening of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, which is set to inaugurate on August 19th 2013, and is currently accepting applications from interested parents.
