Taking learning online despite school closure

The COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus outbreak continues to cause governments and municipalities to close schools across the globe. Choosing not to halt teaching and learning, the Aga Khan Academy Maputo has turned to online learning in order to stay on track with students’ curriculum.

Rosa Jorge: Encouraging expression through the arts

Participating in theatre and drama activities helped Rosa Jorge from a very young age. It gave her the courage to break out of her shell and now she wants to empower her students at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo with the same tools to become well rounded individuals.

Fostering relationships through virtual exchange

In preparation for their annual exhibitions, Grade 5 students from the Aga Khan Academies in Hyderabad and Maputo had a virtual conversation discussing the topics and ideas they will be presenting. The students in Hyderabad gave their colleagues in Maputo a closer look into their booths which prompted students to draw similarities and parallels between their work.

Start of term

The Academic Year 2020-2021 commences online on 10 August 2020 while the campus will remain closed.

Encouraging environmental education at an early age

Mozambican environmental activist and lawyer, Carlos Serra Junior, visited the Aga Khan Academy Maputo to talk about his work on water pollution. He met with students from Grade 3 - 5 and discussed issues like environmental education and water pollution in Mozambique.

Celebrating women through art and inquiry

On Wednesday, 11 March 2020, students from the Middle Years Programme (MYP) came together in as assembly to discuss how they commemorated International Women’s Day over the weekend. They exchanged art and information drawing attention to contemporary gender issues and inequality in the country.

Unmasking the cultural traditions of Mapiko and Nyau

The Grade 7 students participated in a week long mask-making exercise facilitated by artist, Alfredo Semo. Through these art sessions, students discussed and learned about the traditions of the Nyau and Mapiko ethnic groups.
